NAR> This is a place hidden deep within the wild mountains of Yeongwol (영월),
Gangwon-do Province.
It is where King Danjong (단종), the most tragic figure in the 500 years of Joseon History,
is buried.

Title> Jangneung Royal Tomb, Resting Place of a Doomed King

Sub> Reenactment of King Danjong's royal funeral, Danjong Culture Festival

NAR> A special cultural event is held every spring in Yeongwol (영월).
The reenactment of a Joseon state funeral
is for King Danjong (단종), the sixth king of the Joseon Dynasty.
The procession is heading toward Jangneung (장릉) Royal Tomb.

Sub> Jangneung Royal Tomb, Historic Site No. 196

NAR> King Danjong (단종), who became the king at the age of 12, only ruled for 3 years.
After his uncle King Sejo (세조) usurped the throne,
he received the death penalty of poisoning and passed away at 17.

Compared to other royal tombs that are within close proximity of the capital city,
his is here in Yeongwol (영월).

Sub> Yeongwol Cheongnyeongpo Cape, Scenic Spot No. 50

NAR> In 1457, 3 years after he had his throne seized.
King Danjong (단종) was exiled here at Cheongnyeongpo (청령포) Cape.

The young former King rode palanquins and boats
and reached Cheongnyeongpo (청령포) Cape in 7 days.
The royal lodgings surrounded by pine trees were kept away from other people.

Yukyukbong (육육봉) Peak was on the left,
and Seogang (서강) River was in the front.
Cheongnyeongpo (청령포) Cape was completely detached from the outside world.

Sub> King Danjong's lodgings

NAR> 17-year-old Boy King Danjong’s loneliness and despair
remain in this place which seems to be an island within land,

What stands out from the palace yard is the old pine tree
which is bent as if bowing down.
It is also called Eom Hong-do (엄홍도) Tree,
after Eom Hong-do, the official who took care of King Danjong’s remains.

Sub> Eom Hong-do Pine Tree

NAR> Gwaneomsong (관음송) Pine Tree, which King Danjong climbed
in order to look toward Hanyang (한양), remains here.

Sub> Gwaneomsong Pine Tree, Natural Monument No. 349

Sub> Nosandae Platform

Sub> Manghyangtap Tower

NAR> Nosandae (노산대) Platform, which he also visited to gaze toward Hanyang,
and Manghyangtap (망향탑) Tower, which he made longing for his queen, remain here.

This place of exile would have been the world’s end
and an isolated prison for young King Danjong.

Sub> Gwanpungheon Guesthouse, Yeongwol, Gangwon-do Province

NAR> In the summer of that year, a flood in Yeongwol (영월) caused an overflow
in Cheongnyeongpo Cape.
King Danjong moved to Gwanpungheon (관풍헌) Guesthouse, a lodging in Yeongwol.
However, the conspiracy of his uncle Prince Geumseong (금성) was soon exposed,
and King Danjong received the punishment of poisoning.

Sub> Jagyuru Pavilion

NAR> Here, he composed a poem on his pitiable state.

Sub> Jagyuru Pavilion

Jagyu Poem – King Danjong

A bird full of resentment leaves the palace
Its lonely body wanders around mountains without a shadow mate
Night falls and yet sleep does not come
The year changes and yet the bitterness lives on
When cries cease in the mountains and the moon loses its whiteness,
Spring valleys with bloody hues will have red fallen flowers
The sky is deaf to all complaints
And yet why do my sorry ears become better at hearing

NAR> So what happened after King Danjong’s death due to poisoning?

Sub> AHN Baek-wun / Dept. of Cultural Heritage, Yeongwol County Office

Even though King Sejo ordered that all of those
who recovered the remains of King Danjong

after he was thrown into Donggang River
would have three generations annihilated,

Eom Hong-do, the village headman of Yeongwol,
recovered King Danjong’s corpse

and secretly buried him here.

Sub> Jangneung Royal Tomb, Historic Site No. 196

NAR> Eom Hong-do (엄홍도), who recovered King Danjong’s remains with his life at stake,
buried them here by avoiding the eyes of others.
The owner of the tomb had his royal title restored after 240 years,
and the tomb earned the name, Jangneung (장릉).

Jangneung (장릉) Royal Tomb has another unusual characteristic.

Sub> Jeongryeogak Pavilion

NAR> There are many buildings and artifacts commemorating the lives of others.

Sub> Jangpanok House

NAR> To whom do all these names belong?

Sub> AHN Baek-wun / Dept. of Cultural Heritage, Yeongwol County Office

The ancestral tablets of the court officials,
eunuchs, soldiers, maids and female shamans

who were sacrificed or martyred
due to their connection with King Danjong,

are preserved under care right here.

That would be the most unique characteristic
which sets it apart from other Joseon Dynasty Royal Tombs.

NAR> Jangneung (장릉) Royal Tomb is a historical site
that holds in the souls of not only King Danjong, but also those of his supporters.

The doomed King lived a short life,
but the hearts of the people who still cherish the memory of him are full of longing.
