Sub> Jeongseon, Gangwon-do Province

NAR> Jeongseon (정선) in Gangwon-do Province is surrounded by layers of mountains.
The stories of difficult lives spent on cultivating rough lands
were made into songs sung by the people.

Title> Jeongseon Arirang, Songs of Life

NAR> Songs come out naturally when life is full of joy,
but people also sing when there are hardships.

Sub> Lee Yong-seong

The sun setting in the western mountain cannot help it

My lover who has left me cannot help it

NAR> Jeongseon (정선) had been an isolated area
in the Baekdudaegan (백두대간) Mountain Range since times of old.
The men grew old as they fought against the rough land.

Sub> Kim Sun-deok / Jeongseon Arirang Teaching Assistant

It is not like I don’t know the taste of meat dishes

Corn rice all year long will do when my mind is at leisure

NAR> The women lived such poor lives that it was said that
they couldn’t even eat 8kg of rice before they got married.

Whenever their work was hard, their stomachs were empty,
their relationships ended in separation, their loved ones were missed,
and their resentment grew, the people sung Arirang with their whole hearts.

Sub> YOO Myeong-hui / Member, Gangwon-do Cultural Heritage Committee

All human emotions are contained in them.

Arirang really embodies the life stories
of the Jeongseon people.

There are over 6,000, even 10,000 lyrics
that have been collected so far.

Sub> Chilhyeon Historic Park, Jeongseon, Gangwon-do Province

NAR> So when did these songs filled with diverse life stories begin?
The most widely-known origin story is that 7 courtiers who had opposed against
the founding of the Joseon Dynasty, abandoned the outside world and lived here,
and that their story was made into a song and gave birth to Jeongseon (정선) Arirang.

Sub> Kim Hyeong-jo / Holder of Jeongseon Arirang Art

Will there be snow, will there be rain or will there be a downpour

Sub> Chilhyeon Memorial Stone

NAR> In this representative song of Jeongseon (정선) Arirang,
the “dark clouds of Mansusan (만수산) Mountain”
are said to signify the soldiers of Yi Seong-gye (이성계).

Sub> Black clouds from Mansusan Mountain are approaching

NAR> This was an isolated land where the 7 courtiers came to live in.
How did Jeongseon (정선) Arirang spread through the country?

Sub> Auraji Lake, Jeongseon, Gangwon-do Province

NAR> Auraji (아우라지) Lake in this area
was named after how two streams formed a harmony to become one.
The water connected here becomes Donggang (동강) River,
which then flows into Hangang (한강) River.

Sub> Raft Ritual, Auraji Raft Festival

NAR> In the summer of every year, a raft festival is held here.

At times when lumber was scarce, the lumber of Jeongseon (정선) was made into rafts
and transported to Hanyang (한양) through the river.

84-year-old Mr. Han Sang-yeol (한상열), the last raft carrier,
remembers the events from then.

Sub> HAN Sang-ryeol

The gisaeng women would board with liquor.
They would board and grab us, asking us to go home with them.

Hwangsaeyeoul and Dwengogari are passed through

So Yeongwol Deokpo gisaeng, prepare drinks and food.

NAR> 420 km of waterway lie between Jeongseon (정선) and Hanyang (한양).
Wherever the raft carriers stayed, drinks and songs followed,
and these songs spread out to give birth to the Arirangs throughout the country.

One summer, a couple had to be separated over the Auraji (아우라지) River
when it flooded.
The song that was made became a representative song of Jeongseon (정선) Arirang.

Sub> Shin Soon-ja / Former trainee of Jeongseon Arirang Art

Auragji boatman, hand over your boat

Ssari-gol Village’s camellias are all falling.

Sub> YOO Myeong-hui / Member, Gangwon-do Cultural Heritage Committee

It’s the icon of our people.
I think that Arirang, which embodies

the emotional aspects of life
by being the people’s icon and a cultural icon,

is the traditional cultural asset
that can be preserved like Pansori.

Sub> Butterflies seeing flowers are like geese seeing water

NAR> With subjects on the hardships of labor, the pain of separation
and the humor of daily life,
The songs of Jeongseon (정선) Arirang are continued on
through the voices of the people.
