NAR> He is on his way to meet Wonhyo, a Silla Dynasty monk.
To him, Bunhwangsa Temple is the land where Wonhyo resides.

Title> Wonhyo Exists Here
Bunhwangsa Temple

Sub> Bunhwangsa Temple
Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province

Bunhwangsa Temple was constructed because
Queen Seondeok became the first female emperor.

The appearance of a thifty queen,
a homemaker hard at work,

and the heart with love for the people were reflected
in Bunhwangsa Temple. That's how it began.

NAR> Queen Seondeok, the 27th ruler of the Silla Dynasty.
This first queen of the Korean Peninsula wished to see the country grow large and
powerful, and constructed Bunhwangsa Temple, with a name meaning
“Temple of a Fragrant Emperor.”
She dreamed of a making a national leap with the help of Buddhism.

Sub> Bunhwangsa Temple
Temple built during Year 634 (3rd year of Queen Seondeok's reign)
and known as the site where High Monks Wonhyo and Jajang resided

NAR> Monk Wonhyo stayed at Bunhwangsa Temple and published Hwaeomgyeongso,
that is, the ‘Treatise of the Huayan Sutra.’ The temple became the center
for propagating Buddhism.

Sub> Center of Buddhist propagation in Silla

The place that was made by Queen Seondeok
and kept empty

was occupied by Monk Jajang, and then Monk Wonhyo.
So Bunhwangsa Temple began to grow with Wonhyo.

Wonhyo wished to console the people
who had suffered from wars and politics through Buddhism

NAR> The female ruler who ascended to the throne after many wars
in the reign of King Jinpyeong.
Under such circumstances, the people had to suffer as well.
Monk Wonhyo wished to stay by the people
and console them through Buddhism.

Sub> What Buddhist wishes is to have everyone become Buddhas.

The monks say "May you attain Buddhahood"
whenever we leave a temple.

Wonhyo really wanted all the people in Seorabeol
to become Buddhas.

That's called "Buddha Land." Where Buddha exists.
What do you think Wonhyo dreamed of here?

He didn't say, "You're too ignorant anyway,
so listen to our teachings." He approached them.

That is why Bunhwangsa Temple is where Buddhism is.
At least to me. That's why I become determined here.

There's a determination that all scholars must have.
That we should not side with politics, but with the people.

That's the kind of place Bunhwangsa Temple is.
It was a small temple in the beginning,

but its significance grew with Wonhyo.
He made Bunhwangsa Temple what it is now.

Keep the image in your head,

and visit Hwangryongsa Temple at night and feel its size.
A large temple which was sponsored by royalty.

NAR> Queen Seondeok had her coronation in Year 632.
At the time, Hwangryongsa Temple was a national temple.
It had been the largest temple in the East.
Bunhwangsa Temple was built right across from it.

Sub> Hwangryongsa Temple Site in Gyeongju (Historic SIte No. 6)
Built from a 93-year national project
Reflects Silla's view of Buddhism, which was "Silla is where Buddha lives"

It burned down completely in 1238 (25th year of Goryeo King Gojong's reign),
and only its traces remain today

NAR> So why did Monk Wonhyo, who was a high priest at the time,
reside in Bunhwangsa Temple and not Hwangryongsa Temple?

Sub> When Bunhwangsa Temple rose, it formed
a conflict composition with Hwangryongsa Temple.

It was a Bodhisattva and had to save the people.
That is what Wonhyo did at Bunhwangsa Temple

That's not how it was at Hwangryongsa Temple.

Royalty tried to do something with their political authority.
That’s why Wonhyo stayed at Bunhwangsa Temple.

NAR> Queen Seondeok wished to proclaim the opening of a new era.
Her grand dream is also reflected in the exceptional pagoda
that was built along with the temple.

Sub> Special pagoda built with Bunhwangsa Temple

NAR> A three-story pagoda with a height of 9.3 meters.
The Stone Brick Pagoda of Bunhwangsa Temple has a unique material.
Compared to other brick pagodas, this was made through natural carved rocks,
and boasts the longest history out of all remaining Silla pagodas.

Sub> Stone Brick Pagoda of Bunhwangsa Temple in Gyeongju (National Treasure No. 30)
Oldest masterpiece of Silla stone pagodas with brick-shaped stones
Presumed to have been built in Year 634 (3rd year of Queen Seondeok's reign)

Stone Brick Pagoda of Bunhwangsa Temple,
the oldest Silla stone pagoda

When Bunhwangsa Temple was built,
that was in the center.

In Mahayana Buddhism, pagodas are important symbols.
Icons if you will.

If you see here, stone pieces
were carved into brick shapes.

Imitation pagodas are made of
brick-shaped cement or soil,

but that was made with stones.
That is very unique.

When I first came here, I looked around,

and then I discovered that and wondered,
"Why is that here? That's not soil, what is it?"

I think that is because it was built in the early days
of Queen Seondeok, and was sponsored by royalty,

so much effort must have been made.
But there is something else I'm curious about.

When you learn about pagodas, the usual formula is
brick pagodas for China, and wooden pagodas for Japan.

And we have stone pagodas like Pagoda of Shakyamuni
and Pagoda of Many Treasures.

So why did they build Bunhwangsa Temple and that?
Why did they make it here? There was Chinese influence.

That is not a mere construction style,
but an amalgam of historical topography, diplomatic limits,

and a sign of how the Tang Dynasty and Silla were close.
Also how their cultures were exchanged.

NAR> What knowledge did Bunhwangsa Temple impart to
Philosopher Kang Shin-joo?

Sub> Ah, nothing is absolute.
Then what should we do?

It would be great if you bring your children here.
They can see how it changes!

They thought that would be absolute,
and they thought it wouldn't change, and yet it did.

It would be great if you told that to your children.
You will be teaching them all about freedom.

They will learn from them that the life they live
is not absolute.

NAR> Cultural heritage which transcends the time and space of sages.
For him, cultural heritage is another rank of enlightenment.

Sub> For me, cultural heritage
is another kind of enlightenment
