대본 정보 | HYEON Gi-yeong / Novelist When we talk about the April 3 Massacre, we call it the extermination of families... An extermination... When I was in high school, I heard people quietly talking about something and they were saying so and so died in the April 3 Massacre. April 3 was like toxic gas hanging in the air. It was an inconsolable sorrow. For a long time, people were in a resigned state. The Land of Memories Jeju April 3 Massacre Sites Jeju Gwandeokjeong Hall, Jeju Treasure No. 322 Gwandeokjeong Hall A government building from the Joseon Dynasty. Oldest building in Jejudo Island. Just like how Gwanghwamun Gate is the center of Seoul, this place is the center of Jejudo Island. All important government offices and buildings were right here. Many riots were staged on the mainland and on Jejudo Island in the late Joseon Dynasty when the society was quite corrupt. People gathered to condemn those with power, who were corrupt. This is the place where they took action. Jeju April 3 Massacre March 1, 1947 Began with a shooting in front of Gwandeokjeong Hall Massacres that were carried out on Jejudo Island from April 3, 1948 to September 21, 1954 Video recorded at the time of Jeju April 3 Massacre Source: Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Bukchon-ri, Jeju Bukchon Elementary School Bukchon Massacre In just a day, over 400 villagers were killed at Bukchon Elementary School Dangpat A field next to a shrine Monument Commemorating an Exemplary Rule of Jeju County Magistrate I was 7 years old at the time. We had just moved from my old hometown to downtown Jeju, so my family was saved from this tragedy. However, I saw my hometown being burned down. Even though I was far away. The fire shed light that turned my mother’s face red. I also saw my sister’s face turn red. The shock stayed with me for a long time. Ungle Sun-ie Monument In the five, slightly dipping fields that belong to Uncle Sun-ie, pale bodies were strewn all over the place. - Excerpt from “Uncle Sun-ie” Children’s Grave In this children’s grave, kids my age also lie underneath the grave. I managed to survive and lived to this age. Had they lived, they would have had so many possibilities. They would have been able to enjoy life to the fullest. But they only lived not even 1/10 their life expectancy and died. That is really tragic. Bukchon Neobeunsungi 4.3 Memorial Hall Memorial services began in almost all houses on the same day at the same time. Wailing cries were heard from almost all the houses on the same day at the same time. - Excerpt from “Uncle Sun-ie” Because this was caused by the governmental authority, because it was done by violence led by the government, people couldn’t condemn the massacre. It would have led to the criticism of the government. So the victims had to keep silent, holding their fury and sorrow inside. You must talk or express your feelings on certain things and even remonstrate wrongdoings in order to resolve the feelings of anger and sorrow but they had to hold all of that tightly inside and keep silent. Namwon, Seogwipo Jeju April 3 Suak Station Registered Cultural Heritage No. 716 Video recorded at the time of Jeju April 3 Massacre Source: Jeju Special Self-Governing Province In textbooks, people try to record only the parts of history where we’ve been successful. However, we must also record our failures. Because if we ignore and reject our failures, then the history would repeat itself. We must record our past failures so that people will not forget. Hwabuk1-dong, Jeju Site of Goneul-dong Village This is the site of a house. This is the stone wall. It’s a site of a burned down home. April 3 historical sites stand as a witness to the one of the greatest tragedies in Korea. The land that had been completely razed... Although the grass now grows and the land has been reborn, the land still retains memories of the tragic event. The ruins remember that tragedy. They tell us that we must never forget.
