Taegeukgi, legislated and proclaimed as the national
flag of Korea on the order of Emperor Gojong

Since then, taegeukgi has always been by our side

The flag that tied all of us together as one
and strengthened our determination

But...
there's one that was found 90 years later

Another precious flag

It’s the cultural heritage that makes my heart beat fast.

It is more than just a flag.
It holds many stories.

It also holds Korean people’s fury,
sorrow and fervent wish.

Moreover, it holds our people’s dream.

Jingwansa taegeukgi is more
than just a taegeukgi flag.

Cultural heritage that moves your heart
even when you just think about it

The flag that holds anger,
sorrow and a fervent wish

by the 8th king of Goryeo Dynasty, King Hyeonjong

Wow...
The view is amazing here.

I enjoy climbing mountains,

but I never imagined that mountains
with such a spectacular view existed in Seoul.

Hello, Monk Seonwoo.

Monk Seonwoo/ Jingwansa Temple

Hello. Welcome.

Nice to meet you. What brought you here?

I heard that the Jingwansa Taegeukgi is here
so I came to see it.

You came to the right place.
This is where the Jingwansa Taegeukgi was found.

Would you like to come in?

Even though all the other buildings
were burned down during the Korean War,

these 2 buildings, Chilseonggak
and Dokseongjeon survived.

We found this on May 26, 2009.
It was found in the wall behind the portrait

of the Buddha that hangs behind the statue
of Buddha right in front of you.

Other buildings were burned down
during the Korean War

Only Chilseokggak Shrine
and Dokseongjeon Hall preserved

If this building had burned down during the war,
we wouldn’t have been able to discover this in 2009.

The heritage we might have lost forever

had the building burned down
during the Korean War

I live nearby. Koreans often hang flags
on March 1st or National Liberation Day.

I often saw another flag next to the usual Korean flag.
It didn’t have the taegeuk mark that we’re familiar with.

It was a very old flag that wasn’t clean.
But I saw people hanging that flag.

I always wondered why they did that.
With such a question on my mind,

I visited the Independence Hall of Korea in Cheonan.
And I saw that flag again there.

The old and worn flag that I saw before.
When I read the description,

I thought, ‘So this is why people hung
this flag alongside the usual flag.’

Unique flag that you can see often

on March 1st or on National Liberation Day

if you live near Eunpyeong-gu

Taegeuk mark and 4 black triagrams
painted over the national flag of Japan

At the time, Korea was under the rule of Japan.

But painting the taegeukgi flag over the national flag
of Japan was something you couldn’t do unless

you were willing to risk your life despite
the oppression. They risked their lives.

It shows just how enraged they were and
their strong determination to regain their country,

at the risk of their lives. I feel so many emotions
when I think about that as I look upon the flag.

A flag drawn at the risk of death
amidst great oppression

Infused with the fervent wish
for Korea’s independence

Heritage filled with the determination
to restore one’s country from a century ago

The view is amazing.

Yes. I feel the same every day.

Geographically, Jingwansa Temple
is very near Gupabal.

This place was also an important transportation point.

We can easily assume that people collected
information as well as raise funds from all over Korea

to send to Uiju or Shanghai from here.

Located next to Gupabal, which was
an important transportation point at the time

Assumed to have collected
information from all over Korea here

and raised funds to send

and led the anti-Japanese movement later on

and died in prison from severe torture

Thank you.

- Together.
- Okay.

I’m nervous.

Humidity control is a way to preserve it.
Here is the original.

To the side…

This is the taegeukgi flag.

We won’t be going close.
We’ll be seeing it from a distance.

Japan’s national flag is sewn with cotton cloth.

It is very thorough, sewn twice.

You can see clearly that
the Korean flag was painted over it.

Yes.

The paint ran slightly here.
It spread like this because it’s been painted over.

Right.

So many emotions are preserved inside this flag.

Not just the feeling of desperation at the time,

but also Korean people’s anger,
hope and all kinds of stories.

This flag is more valuable because it holds all that.

Taegeuk mark and 4 black triagrams painted over
the national flag of Japan, sewn using cotton cloth

So many emotions seem
to be infused in the taegeukgi flag

Desperation, fury and the wish
of the Korean people

This taeguekgi flag is so valuable
because it holds the story of the Korean people

I think this is what history is all about.
It’s easy to forget unless we pay attention.

I remember studying history
really hard when I was a student.

But it feels so unfamiliar when
faced with what I studied before.

We only take out the taegeukgi flag on holidays
such as March 1st or the National Liberation Day.

I hope that instead of just putting out the flag,

we should remember those who sacrificed
themselves and fought for this country.

We must reflect upon their spirit and their sacrifices,
what efforts they made and what they sacrificed.

And also, we must think about just how much
they hoped to see this flag flying high.

I have a child.
So I would like to teach such things to my kid.

The history we may forget
if we do not show interest

Taegeukgi flag you can only see
on national holidays

Whenever you see the national flag of Korea

remember those who sacrificed
their lives for this country
