| 대본 정보 | Suwon Hwaseomun Gate Hwaseong Fortress, Suwon (Historic Site No. 3) Suwon Hwaseomun Gate (National Treasure No. 403) The Hwaseomun Gate in Suwon is the western gate of Hwaseong Fortress and preserves well its original form at a time of architecture Jeong Hae-deuk, a professor of Hanshin University’s Department of Korean History The Hwaseong is a 5.7-km fortress which was built during King Jeongjong’s reign in the Joseon Dynasty(1392-1910) and went through a restoration work in the late 1970s, showing a perfectly reenactment of the fortress. The perfect reenactment is attributable to a report of "Hwasengsongyouk-eugye" at a time of construction. The Hwaseomun Gate and at its beside the Seobukgongshimdon, or a north-west observation towerare all the facilities which were constructed at a time of the kings’ rule, which are currently designated as national treasures. As the Hwaseomun Gate has a lower gate tower and even a barbicane in front of the gate, it is difficult to identify the guard from a distance. On the other hand, on the inside, it commands a fine view outward. Seobukgongshimdon, or a north-west observation tower in Suwon (National Treasure No. 1710) The inside of Seobukgongshimdon (first floor) Second floor Third floor The Seobukgongshimdon, or a north-west observation towerbuilt beside the Hwaseomun Gate was constructed as a base to protect the Hwaseomun Gate. The Gongshimdon of observation tower was learned from the Chinese castles, but the Seobukgongshimdon located at Suwon incorporated a new scientific technology introduced from the then-China into the traditional castle architectural style of the Joseon Period to match the Hwaseong Fortress well. The Seobukgongshimdon structure tells that Joseon was not a stagnant society, but a dynamic society which sought out a social development. |
