나래이션>
Thousands of travellers come and go

from Incheon International Airport each day.

A man rushes past the passengers with a stern look on his face.

It just so happens something suspicious

was found in a passenger's belongings.

He investigates it to see if it is a valuable relic.

말자막>
This could be a precious cultural asset,
so it should not be taken out of Korea.

나래이션>
Incheon Airport is the front line for preserving Korea's heritage.

We introduce you to Choi Tae-hui,

inspector of the Cultural Heritage Administration.

His job is to protect cultural relics

from being smuggled out of the country.

제목자막>
Choi Tae-hui,
Appraiser of Cultural Properties
and Protector of Cultural Heritage
-Pt.1-

장소자막>
Incheon International Airport
Unseo-dong, Jung-gu, Incheon Metropolitan Airport

나래이션>
Choi goes to work in the morning at the airport, as usual.

He walks into the Cultural Heritage Inspection Office

like he always does.

The office was set up to stop any valuable relics

from being smuggled out of the country.

글자막>
In Feburary 1968, Korea built an Cultural Properties Appraisal Office
in Gimpo Airport and Busan Airport,
and now manages a total of 17 offices nationwide.

나래이션>
Anything that is suspected to have historic value

is brought into the office for inspection.

글자막>
They have been under the Cultural Heritage
Administration since January 2007.

나래이션>
It is his job to determine whether it stays or goes.

The first task of the day is to pick out the relics

he investigated and upload it to a visual database.

This data is shared with cultural heritage

inspection offices nationwide.

There are a total of 17 offices at important ports

and airports around Korea.

Choi is the director of the whole operation.

말자막>
Choi Tae-hui 61/Appraiser of Cultural Properties
I make mistakes with well-made
counterfeit potery once in a while.

When I come across one
I get a second opinion via video.

Another inspector could be of great help,
I call up the inspector in charge

That day and connect with them
online to exhange opinions.

나래이션>
Before the departure of a flight to Japan, Oseokje,

an antique seller, brings his things into the office for inspection.

It is a precautionary step he takes before leaving the country.

He had a total of 18 relics.

The items are placed on top of the table.

Choi looks alert and ready.

말자막>
Choi Tae-hui 61/Appraiser of Cultural Properties
Most of them look like a modern replica.

말자막>
How long does it take for you
to determine its status?

말자막>
It seems very simple but you have to consider
the shape, the pattern, its state, the bake and more.

I have to consider all factors
when making a decision.

나래이션>
He takes a picture of all 18 items as proof.

Now for the inspection.

말자막>
5.3 centimeters in diameter.

나래이션>
He takes down the measurements and records it on the form.

Another inspector joins in the inspection process.

말자막>
This is Baksan.
It looks like Geumgangsan. Am I right?

말자막>
Incense burner

말자막>
Is this a Geumgangsan shape water dropper?

말자막>
It looks like more of an incense burner?
You can open the top

말자막>
Oh it`s an incense burner.
Look how it splits here.

나래이션>
It is a rule to have more than two inspectors in each session.

말자막>
Lee Suk-hui 53/Appraiser of Cultural Properties
We never have enough hands.

Sometimes we have to make decisions
with artifacts that are not in our specialty.

We have to call in the professionals
for help in those cases.

나래이션>
Oseokje stands aside, seemingly anxious.

Choi makes sure no detail goes unnoticed.

They both confuse that

all items can be taken out of the country.

By the time Oi is done with his things,

another man steps into the office.

It is Han Manho, another antique seller.

He puts down his items.

말자막>
Why do you always have it evaluated?

말자막>
Han Man-ho 53/Cultural Heritage Inspector
We never have enough hands.

Taking artifacts outside the country
could get me in some serious trouble.

나래이션>
Inspectors go through the same process.

말자막>
Will this sell?

I guess if you consider it
a modern piece, it could sell.

나래이션>
Han is good to travel with everything he brought.

The items that have been inspected receive

a certified paper, a mark that shows

they were approved before leaving the country.

말자막>
We seal it off so they can`t replace it
with a genuine artifact after the inspection.

말자막>
Are you happy with the outcome?

말자막>
Oh Seok-jae Antique Seller
Yes I am!

말자막>
Thank you.

말자막>
Thank you so much.

나래이션>
Han is happy with the results as he leaves the office.

The two inspectors enjoy a cup of tea after their hard work.

The subject never wanders off from inspecting.

말자막>
We have citizens that buy artifacts thinking
they are real, but most of them are replicas...

나래이션>
The job requires a constant state of your voice.

In between inspections and personal research,

Choi pulls out a photo album.

There are pictures of him when he was young.

말자막>
Around the authoritarian reform in 1977,
I was always questioned for having long hair,

but I could get away with it
because I was a civil servant.

The head of the department
criticized me many times.

He thought my hair was too long,
and my outfit was too flashy.

나래이션>
Choi has always loved fashion and arts.

He was destined to become a cultural heritage inspector.

말자막>
I started working for the Cultural Heritage
Administration on December 1 of 1976

When the historic artifacts from
the Sinan shipwreck site came pouring in.

We had to stay behind and work all night
the first day at the office. This is a picture.

나래이션>
Choi Tae-hui was asked to participate in

Korea's first underwater excavation at Sinan many years ago.

He fell in love with an old piece of porcelain he found.

At the young age of 30,

he was hired as a cultural heritage inspector.

So since 1983, he has worked at Gimpo International Airport

and then went to Incheon International Airport.

He has been active in the field for 30 years,

halting important historic artefacts

from being taken out of the country.

There are flights to over 170 destinations

all over the world that take off from Incheon.

Over 6,000,000 passengers fly in and out

of the airport every year.

It is also a cargo hub that distributes goods all over the world.

Therefore, to stop potential smuggling of historic goods

out of the country, the government runs

an inspection office under the Cultural Heritage Administration.

Suddenly, the phone rings.

말자막>
Departure terminal number 3?
I`ll be there in a moment.

나래이션>
Choi's face goes stiff.

A security officer locked the door.

What's going on?
