나래이션>
In Seongsongli, Seongsanmyeon of Jeju Island,

there is a mountain comprised of a single massive rock.

Its appearance changes depending on from

where and how you look at it.

It is the first stop on the tour

of Jeju Island's top ten landscapes.

It looks like a sea turtle from one angle

and a crown from another.

How did Seongsan Ilchubong acquire its curious appearance?

Approximately 5000 years ago, lava spewed

from the coastal waters of Jeju Island.

The sticky lava mixed with seawater to give rise

to a craterless peak, and the powerful waves chipped away

at the sides, leaving behind sheer cliffs.

That is to say, Seongsan Ilchulbong is

a joint creation of the sea, volcano and waves.

The wind and rain created rocks of diverse shapes

and forms on the plateau created by an underwater volcano.

The peculiar rocks have not escaped people's attention.

Interesting tales have been spun for

the particularly eye-catching formations.

Those rocks that are sent to make wishes come true

receive the largest number of visitors.

There is a rock named Deunggyeongdol for

its resemblance to a lantern, which is called Deung in Korean.

Deunggyeongdo

Legend has it that the depressions in the rock

were left behind by General Kim Tongjong,

who led the Sambyulcho, a Goryeo military unit

against the Mongols General Kim ran up Deunggyeongdo

for physical and spiritual training.

The depressions are said to be his footprints.

Thereafter, local villagers performed ancestral rites

in front of this rock.

They prayed for peace and the well-being of their village

and families if young men had gone to battle.

The villagers prayed that General Kim would protect them

and bring them home safely.

Nowadays, people come here to make a wish

or pray for the health and peace of their families.

Countless people will also stop by Geunyeongdol today,

praying for their wishes and dreams to come true.

Surrounding Seongsan Ilchulbong are 99 high peaks.

They resemble an imposing fortress,

hence the name Seongsan after Seong,

which means fortress in Korean.

The sharp cliffs look like fiery flames and beyond the peak.

The morning sun shows itself.

This is why watching the sunrise on

Seongsan Ilchulbong has long been considered

the first stop on the tour of Jeju Island's top 10 attractions.

That is, watching the sunrise on Seongsan Ilchulbong

is a long standing tradition.

The governors of Jeju are said to have admired

the sunrise from here.

Dispatched from the mainland afar, the governors

must have made their wishes as they watched the sunrise.

What could they have wished for?

As government officials, wouldn't they have prayed

for the peace and prosperity of their country and people?

On this island of wind and rain, the natural maritime environment

has created a remarkable landscape.

Seongsan Ilchulbong has seen hundreds of thousands

of sunrises and countless more wishes and prayers,

which have deepened the peak's mystique and spiritual aura.

Even today, new wishes and prayers are being etched

into Seongsan Ilchulbong.
