Banquet Hall of Silla Royalty,

글자막>
Anapji
Geongju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do

나래이션>
The only remaining pond among the historical sites of Silla.

Its name is Anapji.

글자막>
Artificial pond with three islands
from ancient Silla, covering 15,659m²

나래이션>
It looks like a natural pond, but it is actually an artificial pond.

What did the Silla people do after making such a beautiful pond?

This pond raises many questions for the present day people.

Anapji was part of the palace of unified Silla,
and through it we can get a glimpse of the society of the time.

Anapji used to be called worji.

The name Anapji was given much later, during the Joseon Dynasty,
because ducks and geese flew into this place, which was in ruins.

글자막>
Water tank path
Waterway supplying water to Anapji

나래이션>
What is interesting about Anapji is that even though
it is an artificial pond, water flows through it year round.

And that is because they built waterway systems
and revetments in a curvy shape.

Unlike average artificial ponds,
Anapji has a self-purification system and it is quite majestic.

And through the artifacts excavated at Anapji,
we can tell that it was used for royal receptions and banquets for officials.

글자막>
At the time of the excavation of Anapji in 1975

나래이션>
In 1975, when the excavation started,
we could witness the original scale of Anabji constructed by the ancient Silla people.

글자막>
Over 30,000 artifacts were excavated,
including pottery, roof tiles,
Buddhist artifacts, wooden boats, helmets, etc.

나래이션>
31 building sites were discovered,
and 30,000 or so artifacts that showed a glimpse of the life of the Silla royals were excavated.

글자막>
Juryeonggu
14-sided dice excavated from Anapji

나래이션>
Among the artifacts was a wooden article called Juryeonggu.

Juryeonggu has 14 sides.

It is like modern day dice with different engravings on each side.

글자막>
Drink three shots of alcohol at once

나래이션>
One of drinking three shots of alcohol at once,
which we say bottoms up for these days.

글자막>
Drink it all with arms linked together

나래이션>
And drinking with arms linked together,
which we call a love shot these days.

글자막>
Laugh out loud after finishing your drink

나래이션>
And then there's the laughing out loud after emptying your glass.

글자막>
Hit many people`s noses

나래이션>
It also says to hit many people's noses.

글자막>
Stay still while your face is being tickled

나래이션>
Since it says you must stay still when someone tickles you,
it must be for playing a game during a party.

글자막>
Dance without music

나래이션>
And it also says to dance without any music.

We can see how the Silla people increased the merriment of a party
by playing this game.

글자막>
Green-glazed roof-end tile with beast design

나래이션>
There were as many artifacts excavated as large a scale as Anapji is.

글자막>
Ridge-end tile
Roof-end tile with lotus design

글자막>
Wooden support
Decorative wooden block

나래이션>
Along with roof and tile with Lotus design,
most of the artifacts were deeply related to the life of Silla Royals.

글자막>
Roof tile style in Unified Silla
palace construction

나래이션>
And these have become invaluable materials that gave us a chance
to look into the culture of the royal family at the time.

글자막>
Gilt bronze lotus

Railing

나래이션>
The gilt bronze lotus bud ornament and railing let us picture the splendid gardens and pavilions of Anapji.

글자막>
Bronze mirrors

Bronze hairpin

Wooden comb

Hair parting tool made with bones

Bronze rings

나래이션>
And artifacts used by women were also discovered.

Bronze mirrors, bronze hairpins, combs and rings tell us again that these used to belong
to the royal families.

Through Anapji, a pond located in the unified Silla's palace,
we also confirmed the Silla people were involved in active interchange with foreign countries.

글자막>
Mountain goat jawbone
Taptorial bird bones
Dog skull
Deer bones
Pheasant bones
Wild goose bones

나래이션>
Bones of rare animals including deer, geese and camels
were discovered, and this is evidence of the Silla people's trade networks
which reached various foreign countries.

글자막>
Glass cup

나래이션>
And their exceptional navigation played a key role in this.

글자막>
Chinese pottery

Wooden oar
Wooden plug

Another interesting thing is that a wooden vessel was discovered.

글자막>
Wooden boat
Oldest wooden boat discovered in Korea

This six meter wooden vessel is the most developed of its kind
and it is Korea's first wooden vessel.

On this vessel, the Silla nobility enjoyed the scenery of Anapji.

You might think you can see the whole pond,
but the curved shore adds dynamic energy to the limited space.

The Silla people wanted to portray the vast sea in this pond.

Anapji is a mirror that reflects the magnanimous royal culture of the unified Silla.
